Concrete Building Solution – Mike Hennigar Receives Award

Mike Hennigar's General Construction Ltd. of Clark's Harbour, Shelburne County, received a 2004 Award for Design Excellence – Honourable Mention from the Cement Association of Canada.

The award is given to a single-family or multi-family residential project that makes extensive use of concrete building solutions while demonstrating outstanding design and functionally.

These awards are intended to encourage the kind of innovation that brings healthy and environmentally responsible housing to consumers, said CAC President, François R. Lacroix. They also symbolize the cement industry's commitment to bringing quality home building solutions to the Canadian homebuilding industry.

This Award winning 1,600 square foot bungalow, built by Mike Hennigar's General Construction Ltd., was built in Barrington Passage as an 'ICF Showcase Home', said Lacroix. The home incorporated full height ICF walls and in-floor radiant heating in all living areas and the garage.

Over 800 people visited this home and learned for the first time about the benefits of ICF housing. With his attention to detail and innovative designs, Mr. Hennigar is a leader in the Canadian home building industry and is truly deserving of this award.

ICFs are hollow foam blocks or panels, which are stacked to form the shape of the walls of a home. The forms are filled with reinforced concrete to create a solid structure, sandwiching a high-strength, long lasting material between two layers of light, high-insulation foam.

Building homes with concrete means less construction waste, less maintenance, increased energy efficiency, healthier indoor air quality and a quiet, comfortable living environment. All these benefits demonstrate that ICF construction can help to build sustainable Canadian housing.
