Construction Site Runoff - Protect the Environment

All major builders must manage any potential pollution problems created during the construction of building sites. Construction site runoff is difficult to manage with all of the traffic on a construction site creating and mixing any pollution from the site with the soil and with any runoff during rainstorms. Builders can be fined heavily for not managing site runoff and they are taking extensive steps to make sure that they are not exposed to these fines by managing the runoff from construction sites.

Any chemicals such as tar, discarded paint cans, and other chemicals can not be allowed to enter the sewers or the storm run off pipes. Builders are adding proper bins for storing this kind of waste and must also arrange for proper disposal of the material that ends up as waste during the construction process. Construction sites runoff can do a lot of damage to our environment if allowed to enter rivers and lakes.

All subcontractors must also follow these same site runoff guidelines when they are working on a construction site for the major contractor. Most contractors will automatically have this in the contract and any charge against the prime contractor on a construction site, will automatically be cross charged to the subcontractor. If you are a subcontractor on a construction site, it is always a good idea to find out what the rules are before you begin work on the house or building that you are working on.
