Building Safe Rooms - Save Lives

Many people never have to contend with a tornado or a hurricane thankfully, however those that do can take steps to increase their safety. Consumers in tornado prone areas are building safe rooms that are constructed to withstand the force of tornado winds, and most importantly, are secure from projectiles that move at speeds that can penetrate most walls unless they are made of thick concrete. Building a safe room is extremely important in tornado alley, as are early warning systems. Safety starts with ensuring that the people paying attention to the weather and to the radio stations who report the weather.

Usually a safe room is built below ground with re-enforced concrete walls that can withstand the force of winds that can demolish a home completely above them. If the safe building is constructed above ground, all four walls and the roof must be able to withstand the strong winds and the projectiles that may hit the building. Building a safety room either above ground or under the ground must meet standards as identified by FEMA who have built and tested safe rooms in a variety of conditions. Consumers who construct safe buildings that do not meet these standards are risking their lives and the lives of their families.

Above ground buildings must withstand projectiles such as wooden two by fours that can be driven through concrete walls unless the walls are constructed to meet FEMA standards. All consumers must should review these standards and if you are buying a building with a safety room already built, have it checked out to ensure that it is secure and will protect you in a strong tornado.
