Traditional House Designs – Provide Conventional Needs

The majority of homes that are built in the United States and also in Canada follow traditional designs that have passed the test of the environment, the city zoning officers and the market requirements for homes. There are some regional differences, however even these will follow traditional house designs that incorporate some of the basic requirements of all homes. Traditional designs will include 2 to 4 bedrooms, walk in closets, multiple bath rooms, kitchens, dining areas, formal living rooms and a family room just to hang out in. Some homes will incorporate finished basements into plans, while other homes in other regions of the country will not usually have a basement at all. These are usually called slab home designs.

The traditional house design also extends to the front of the home and the back of the home. Many will have a one or two bay garage for parking the car or cars in and there may be sufficient room as well for a small work area or a place to store garden tools. Conventional designs will leave enough room for a small patio at the back since many lots are rather small leaving insufficient room for homeowners to design a pool or large garden into the yard.

At one time most homes could be accessed from a rear roadway with the garage at the back of the home. This traditional method of street design is no longer popular in most cities due to the cost of the land and the security issues that this type of street design provides. One other area that has also changed from conventional design is that all house built today usually must follow a standard design guideline published by the city.
