August 21, 2005 By: Sunny Thaver Solar House Plans – Are Both Passive and ActiveWhen you are designing a home with solar heating in mind, take into account both passive solar heating designs as well as active solar heating designs. Solar house plans developed for consumers can easily do this to ensure that they take advantage of the sun’s maximum heating capabilities at various times of the year depending on the location of the house and the average climate conditions that will be experienced by the homeowner. Two examples of a solar house plan will help illustrate. In cooler climates with a well defined winter, a passive solar heating design can be very important in the winter and a problem in the summer unless the design is right. A home that faces north in a northern climate will enjoy warm solar heating by the sun at the back of the house all winter long since the sun is so far in the south. During the summer months when the earth has tilted and the sun is now providing more light on the northern hemisphere, the sun provides more heat to the western side of the home during the afternoons which could be designed with less windows to heat the interior of the house. Active solar heating of your home involves the purchase of the appropriate design equipment. which often has water circulating through it which is heated by the sun and used to provide heat to hot water systems and also to heat pools. These systems work very effectively when designed properly and incorporated into the house design from the beginning. Another example of a solar heating plan is turning the sun’s rays into electricity and using solar generated electricity in emergency situations to provide power for radios etc. Also see; small house floor plans.About
