February 26, 2006 By: Sunny Thaver International Residential Code – AdoptionMany communities are considering the adoption of an international residential code or IRC, that spells out the international standards for residential building worldwide, fuel gas, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and energy conservation codes in family homes. Adoption of the international house code would give builders a common standard to follow that can be applied everywhere. Both large home builders as well as small home builders will benefit if more and more communities adopt these standards for residential codes. Adoption of these codes on an international basis for residential homes means that suppliers for builders and residential homeowners can standardize on parts and material during the design of the home. Residents who need to find repair parts in the future will have the confidence in knowing that standard parts adhering to international residential codes for their home were used during construction and they will be able to find these parts with little trouble at the local hardware store. National building supply providers also save money by reducing their inventories and only stocking standardized parts for plumbing and electrical components. International code adoption is not without its detractors and so many communities will hold public hearings before they are adopted to listen to any concerns anyone in the community may have. Usually residential home owners do not show up at these hearings, while most builders that are affected will attend to express their support for adopting these codes or changes that may be needed to adjust to local requirements. There may be some extra expense in the short term, however the long term benefits of adopting international building codes for homes in residential construction are usually sufficient to support adoption.
