Contemporary Home Design – Modern Lodge

A home unlike the log and timber crafted creations Town & Country Cedar Homes is traditionally known, is featured in this month’s issue of Architectural Digest magazine.

The 15,000 sq. ft. contemporary structure is located on the West Bay shore of Grand Traverse County’s Peninsula Township, and was built by Town & Country craftsmen in the record time of 15 months.

Termed a “modern lodge” by the Chicago architect that designed it, the home, according to Architectural Digest, was inspired by some of the great lodge structures the architect was familiar with in Yosemite, Yellowstone and other western parks.

“Being recognized in a magazine that celebrates the highest art forms in home design and construction is an honor for Town & Country,” noted Stephen Biggs, president. “It’s an affirmation of our use of natural wood as an art form, and the company artisans who work and craft it. It’s a real public award and we’re proud of it.”

This marks the second time a Town & Country home has appeared in the magazine. Several years ago a log and timber crafted home built in the Northeast for Broadway star Patti LuPone was featured.

The distinctive lakeshore lodge features indigenous woods of cedar, ash and Douglas Fir, rough-cut Indiana limestone, and plenty of glass, with spectacular lake views from virtually every room.

The effect is that even though home dwellers may be inside the capacious winged structure, it feels like they’re living outside.

Graciously donated by the owner---a former computer modem manufacturer---last fall as part of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra Associates’ annual home tour, it drew a record number of visitors.

Three intersecting wings comprise the bay side residence, one running north and south, and the other two, east and west. They house an eclectic variety of bedrooms, library, kitchen and family room.

Connecting the wings is a lofty formal living area traversed by a 100 ft. long bridge like open walkway that parallels dining and living rooms and their shear glass walls. Visitors to the home report a common phenomenon---that traversing the bridge is like floating in mid-air.

Architectural Digest is a prestigious monthly magazine published by Conde Nast Publications, Inc., with headquarters in Los Angeles, CA. It has a circulation of 944,000 and focuses on helping homeowners create innovative interior designs, as well as features on art, antiques, architecture and travel.
